Spearhead Traverse
Spring is coming.. well it might feel like it has been here all winter down in the valley. The bikes are out, and the rock climbing is prime. However up high in the mountains, up higher above the ski lifts its still winter. With a good looking snowpack in the alpine with a snow base exceeding what we had last year the high alpine traverse are in great shape! Quick travel, little avalanche danger and stable weather are all the ingredients to get out an see some alpine terrain on your skis. Dont give up on winter!
The Spearhead traverse is on the top of the list of spring alpine ski traverses. 3 days of high glacier traversing and skiing. With the massive amount of variations and peaks this traverse can be suited for a first time ski traverse experience to the big peak shredding vet looking to ski some peaks.
Day 1
Depart the Blackcomb Ski Resort heading out across the blackcomb glacier, Decker Glacier, Pattison Glacier, Tremor Glacier and finally setting up camp at one of the most scenic spots on the traverse perched on the Curtain Glacier.
Day 1 Camp
Day 2
Offers options for glacier ski runs before breaking down camp. To make the next leg to camp has your crossing 5 different glacier and another endless supply of ski options. Night 2 camp is positions at the furthest reaches of the spearhead traverse on the shoulder of Mount Iago
Day 3
From our perch high on Mt. Iago we descend down to the flats of the Diavolo Glacier. This marks the largest climb and the most challenging glacier travel section on the trip. A long climb takes you to the Fitz/Benvolio col. The next section requires careful glacier travel and a respect for overhead hazards. Once you have turned the corner on to the Overlord glacier the difficulties are almost done. A long traverse a couple short climbs have you either ripping down the singing pass trial to the valley to heading down the Whistler ski resort.
