This course will focus on the required gear for mountaineering, understanding the alpine environment, glacier travel, whiteout navigation, route planning, steep snow climbing and steep riding.

What You Will Learn

Our Women's Ski Mountaineering course is focused on travelling in alpine terrain and skiing interesting lines safely.  The main topics are glaciers, steep snow faces, avalanche assessment and group dynamics.

Day 1

  • Understanding the required gear

  • Understanding glaciers, an alpine environment, crevasse formation, bergschrund formation.

  • Roping up for glacier travel, up/down

  • Whiteout navigation

 

Skills covered are subject to conditions and group ability

Day 2 – Alpine objective

  • Route planning
  • Snow stability forecasting
  • Steep snow climbing/descending
  • Steep ski techniques

Day 3 – Alpine Objective

  • Route planning

  • Student leads

About Ross Berg

Ross has guided, climbed and skied in the European Alps for the last several seasons. When he's at home he can be found working as a heli ski guide in winters and climbing alpine rock routes in summer.
